  • Skoda Fabia gets two new vaiants minus safety features, indirectly hiking prices

Skoda India has added two new variants to the Skoda Fabia line-up in India. Now as we all know, rising fuel prices and increase in interest rates have forced many a manufacturer to hike the price of its cars in India. And Skoda India’s answer to this increasing costs is to launch two new variants which have been stripped of a few features to price the Fabia competitively in the Indian market.

To start with, Skoda India has replaced the Skoda Classic with entry level Skoda Active version both in petrol and diesel variants. However the irony is, Skoda India has taken away driver side airbag, a critical safety feature which was available on the previous Classic variant. Skoda Fabia’s two new variants will be called as Active and Ambition as it will replace the existing Classic and Ambience respectively.

So, as of now the Skoda Fabia Hatchback now comes in 11 variants, six of the variants being petrol powered with the remaining five being diesel powered.  And if you compare the list of features that have been removed to create the 3 thousand rupees price cut, its not hard to figure out the actual hike in prices as opposed to the claimed price cut.

One step forward, two backward is how we’d like to describe this move from Skoda India at a time when customers are becoming increasingly demanding about the features their cars sport. That said, these slight price drops and variant repositioning could actually help spur sales as India still remains a market where safety features aren’t accorded the higher priority than the other bells and whistles. In that light, Skoda India simply has played to the gallery here.
