2012 Mini Coupe Unveiled; Details, Pictures and Video
Selling alongside the MINI Hatch, Convertible, Clubman and Countryman, the British-built MINI Coupé is the first two-seater sports car in the UK brand’s long and proud history. It’s a contemporary and authentic reworking of the classic performance car concept, bringing MINI’s intoxicating blend of go-anywhere attitude and practicality to a new type of customer.
From the belt line down, the Coupe is decidedly inspired by the standard Cooper, but from the greenhouse up, it’s obvious that this is no normal MINI. The automaker says the look has been inspired by Gran Turismo cars of yore, with its sporty silhouette and helmet-like roof with an integrated rear spoiler that automatically extends above 50 mph to aid aerodynamics.
Underneath its unique skin, the Coupe has been set up for a more aggressive drive designed to recall go-karts. Like the standard Cooper, three models will be available. The base Cooper Coupe comes standard with a 121-horsepower 1.6-liter gas four-cylinder, while the S adds a twin-scroll turbocharger for 181 horsepower and an impressive 177 lb-ft. of torque available from 1,600 to 5,000 rpm. The range-topping John Cooper Works Coupe adds more grunt to the tune of 208 horsepower and 192 lb-ft. of torque.
In the video below, MINI presents the reveal film which teases three commercials planned to air in September. Shot like a movie trailer the campaign highlights the MINI Coupé’s slogan “Another Day. Another Adventure”.
